As a professor at Kent State University and an expert on education in China, Dr. Seeberg witnessed firsthand the struggles rural girls face in accessing schooling.
In many remote villages, families survive on subsistence farming. As China shifted from agriculture to industry, migration increased — and so did the need for education. But school fees, textbook costs, and deep-rooted gender biases meant boys were prioritized while girls were often left behind. In 2000, the foundation began with a simple dream: to give girls the chance to learn, grow, and break cycles of poverty. By 2004, the family traveled to rural China to meet the first scholarship recipients — an emotional and life-changing experience that revealed how powerful education can be.
Years passed as they hoped to return, reconnect with the girls, and understand what more could be done. After six years of waiting, that moment finally arrived.
Chapter 4: Reaching the Mountain Village of Montlan
The story takes us deep into the mountains of rural China. After six long years, the family finally travels to the remote village of Montlan — the birthplace of the Montlan Sisters and the heart of the scholarship mission.
Six years earlier, district officials believed the trip would be too difficult and dangerous, so the girls were brought down the mountain to meet the family. But now, the journey continues—this time all the way to Montlan itself.
The reality is harsh: The girls walk over an hour downhill just to reach the bus stop. From there, it is a two-hour bus ride to the provincial center where they attend school. This is their daily routine. That is the price of education.
For many of these girls, the small scholarship they receive is the only money they ever get. That is how challenging life is in these mountain villages — and why it is so crucial that the scholarship continues.
Chapter 5: Reaching the Village of the Lost Sisters
The story reaches the mountain village at last. After two hours of travel, the family arrives in the remote community where many of the Lost Sisters grew up. The village is old, timeless, and unlike anything they had experienced before.
